The horrific events in Tucson, Arizona that resulted in 6 innocent victims being murdered and 14 injured, including U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, have caused the House and Senate Sergeants-at-Arms to reassess the security of members of the U.S. Congress while in their home districts.
As a result, Chief Phillip Morse Sr. of the U.S. Capitol Police, along with House Sergeant-at-Arms Wilson Livingood and Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Terrance Gainer, have prepared the enclosed letter for law enforcement executives.
The letter outlines the steps that they have asked each Congressional office to take in response to Tucson attack. In particular, each member of the House and Senate has been requested to appoint a law enforcement coordinator (LEC) in their office who would be responsible for serving as a point of contact and liaison to law enforcement in their respective districts. The LEC will be responsible for reviewing the particulars of scheduled events and may contact local law enforcement to request their assistance and presence.
